What happens if you eat magic mushrooms?

Referred to as magic mushrooms, shrooms, mushies, psychedelic mushrooms, psychotropic mushrooms, or psilocybin, these fungi induce alterations in mood, perception, and behavior commonly referred to as “tripping.”

Belonging to the genus Psilocybe, these mushrooms are often considered the quintessential magic mushrooms, although hallucinogenic effects can be produced by mushrooms of other genera as well. Psilocybe mushrooms induce hallucinations due to their content of the psychotropic tryptamines psilocybin and psilocin, with some species also containing additional, less potent psychotropic compounds like baeocystin or norbaeocystin. The concentration of psilocybin in a single mushroom ranges from 0.1 to 1.3 percent.

Individuals under the influence of mushrooms may experience perceptual changes such as seeing vibrant colors or intricate patterns. Existing sensations like colors, sounds, tastes, and textures can become distorted, while emotions and sensations may intensify. Time perception may become altered, with the sensation of time either speeding up, slowing down, or halting altogether. There might also be a profound shift in one’s perception of their place in the universe and a sense of connection with a higher consciousness.

Similar to LSD, the effects of a mushroom trip vary depending on factors such as the individual’s characteristics, the dosage consumed, and the specific type of mushroom ingested, as some varieties are more potent than others. The concept of “set and setting,” encompassing the emotional state of the user and the environmental conditions they’re in, significantly influences whether the trip is positive. Individuals in a negative emotional state or in highly structured environments are more prone to experiencing a bad trip, characterized by feelings of paranoia, anxiety, nervousness, or even terror instead of euphoria. The only remedy for a bad trip is to endure it until it subsides. New users are often advised to have a trusted and experienced companion present to assist and support them through the experience.
